Monthly NYCFC Meeting

August 15, 2025

Get together with NYC Friends of Clearwater–Friday, August 15, at 6:30 p.m. Live music, environmental talk, and a potluck.

NYC Friends of Clearwater is an environmental education organization that believes in celebration through music and community.  We are a chartered sloop club of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, both founded by folk musician and activist Pete Seeger 56 years ago to clean up the Hudson River.

We get together every month on the third Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Judson Memorial with live music, environmental discussion, and a potluck. We also are on Zoom so that distant and busy friends can join us.

The History of the Environmental Protection Agency and Its Current Status

This month’s guest speaker, Lisa DiCaprio, will discuss three main phases in the history of the EPA, its establishment in 1970, and focus on conventional forms of pollution. The first phase comprised the 1970 Clean Air Act and the 1972 Clean Water Act. The second phase, as a result of the 2009 Endangerment finding, expanded the authority of the EPA to include limiting greenhouse gas emissions. In this third phase, the current administration has challenged the endangerment filing and is seeking to severely curtail the role of the EPA.

Lisa is a professor at NYU where she teaches courses on history, politics, and sustainability. She is a member of several organizations, including the Sierra Club, 350NYC, the Nature Conservancy, the League of Women Voters, and NYC Friends of Clearwater.

Note on location: The entrance is between 3rd & 4th Streets, just south of Washington Square. Our event is in the basement, so please ring the bell and we’ll buzz you in. @judsonchurchnyc
Subway Info: A,B,C,D,E,F,M to West 4th Street station (at 6th Ave); N, R to 8th Street station (at Broadway); 1 to Christopher Street station (at 7th Avenue).

Our NYC Friends of Clearwater gatherings have been on Zoom these past few years and we will still have a basic Zoom link at our in-person meetings for those who wish to join that way (e-mail us for the recurring link). We still want our friends from further away to be able to join us! We hope to have a better hybrid set-up in the future; if anyone has a skill-set in that area your assistance would be appreciated.

Clearwater is Pete Seeger’s legacy and was founded in the spirit and practice of the arts and activism, so all are welcome to play, sing and hang out with us.  Join in with your instruments, your voices, your poetry, or whatever you would like to share!  It will be helpful if musicians let us know ahead of time that you would like to participate.
