Environmental Presentation
Josh Karen and Bekah Curtis-Heald from the Ecosocialist Working Group of NYC-DSA, which is the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, will talk about building working-class power around publicly owned renewables and a green future driven by sustainability and affordability, not the profits of wealthy corporations. They developed and won the Build Public Renewables Act in 2023, which empowers New York State to build publicly owned renewable energy to lower bills, create thousands of union jobs, reduce harmful pollution, and meet climate goals set out in the Community Leadership and Climate Protection Act. They continue to fight to hold the state accountable for building needed renewable energy, and to radically renew our city’s schools with updated green infrastructure.
Sail News
Roy Felshin, our dear past-president until his passing last year, was also a member of the DSA choir. Several members attended NYC Friends of Clearwater’s annual sail on the sloop Clearwater last year. We are expecting this year’s sail to be in June, so stay in touch for the details.
Join Us!
NYC Friends of Clearwater is an environmental education organization that believes in celebration through music and community. We are a chartered sloop club of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, both founded by folk musician and activist Pete Seeger 56 years ago to clean up the Hudson River.
We get together every month on the third Friday at 6:30 p.m.at Judson Memorial with live music, environmental discussion, and a potluck. We also are on Zoom so that distant and busy friends can join us.
Note on location: The entrance is between 3rd & 4th Streets, just south of Washington Square. Our event is in the basement, so please ring the bell and we’ll buzz you in. @judsonchurchnyc
Subway Info: A,B,C,D,E,F,M to West 4th Street station (at 6th Ave); N, R to 8th Street station (atBroadway); 1 to Christopher Street station (at 7th Avenue).
COVID statement: You are welcome to wear a mask or not, as you choose. However, out of respect for the community, please don’t come if you have recently tested positive for COVID or have symptoms of COVID.
Our NYC Friends of Clearwater gatherings have been on Zoom these past few years and we will still have a basic Zoom link at our in-person meetings for those who wish to join that way (e-mail us for the recurring link). We still want our friends from further away to be able to join us! We hope to have a better hybrid set-up in the future; if anyone has a skill-set in that area your assistance would be appreciated.
